Phonics

Teachers plan and teach phonics at HJPS by following the Essential Letters and Sounds programme.

Teaching begins in EYFS where the pupils begin with Phase One, quickly progressing onto Phase 2 as the children show readiness to move forward.

In Key Stage 1, Phonics is taught daily in twenty-minute sessions where children review, learn new and apply sounds through games and other activities.

Children benefit from access to a wide range of resources such as foam letters; interactive games on the whiteboard; and reading books that include specific sounds.

In Key Stage 2, small groups of pupils who require further phonics intervention receive this through group and individual provision.

Support for Spelling is used to guide planning once Phase Five is complete.
